Pakkie History
Personal Mobility Sling Rescue and Evacuation
Device
A unique sling, designed and created by a woman with a
disability, who saw the need for a safe and convenient way to transfer a
person with a disability.
Judy Hoit designed the Pakkie after traveling to South Africa, alone, as
well as taking numerous plane trips in the United States. She saw the need
for airlines to transfer her onto the plane. But soon realized the need
for such a transfer device in many other situations around the world.
Judy is a polio survivor, with limited use of her arms and legs, and uses
a wheelchair fulltime. Previously, airline staff would attempt to lift her
from her wheelchair to the airline aisle chair. And then lift her once
again into her assigned seat on the plane. A procedure unpleasant for
Judy, and awkward for airline staff.
Pakkie (a mobility transfer sling), allows 2 people to move a person
requiring assistance from one location to another. One person grasps loops
at the knee area, a second person grasps loops near the shoulders, and in
a single motion, they lift and move the person needing assistance to the
desired location.
When used in a hospital, nursing home, hospice residence, rehabilitation
facility, etc., the Pakkie can be placed under a patient by using the same
procedure as changing the sheets for a bedridden patient. The patient may
then be moved using the transfer procedure. The Pakkie allows the transfer
of a person, without the assistants ever physically touching the person
around the legs, or under the arms. A major advantage in our world today,
when inappropriate touching can sometimes become an issue.
Pakkie reduces pain and stress for the person requiring assistance. It is
simple and easy to use. There are no moving parts to break or repair.
Light weight, only 9 ounces, easy to store. It is completely washable, and
maybe sprayed with disinfectants for medical purposes. And the Pakkie will
support over 300 lbs.
